16 Days

Posted by: Sheereen on: September 26, 2008

… that’s how long we’ve been here. Oddly enough, it feels as though we’ve lived here for a month already! O.O

It’s the end of the work week yet again! Well, nothing new happened at the office this week. Rogie told us that for today (Friday), he’ll be giving us a lecture on stage management and stuff that happens during theater events etc. So that’s something to look forward to! Monday to Thursday saw us being cooped up in the office for the second week in the row. But oddly enough, my brain hasn’t been sucked dry! I think that means I’m getting used to The Daily Grind (har-har!)

Boring stuff aside, a few funny things happened (especially during lunch). 99% of the “little roadside coffee shops” (as I like to call them) are Thai-centric so that means the owners only speak Thai (and if we’re lucky, a smattering of English) and their menus are also – suprise! surprise! – in Thai.

One particular day, Rogie and Nud went out for business related stuff at Khao San Road so that meant Rae and I had to get lunch by ourselves. Since we wanted to explore the neighbourhood around our office, we ventured further down the road and wound up at this little shop (we have no idea what it’s called because it has no signboard). Everything was in Thai! So Rae decided to “point-and-purchase” while I decided to stick with the safest – Pad Thai (haha!). However, the owner of the restaurant (this friendly Thai dude) said (in his very limited English) that there wasn’t any Pad Thai. *gasp!* But for Rae’s, he asked her something unintelligible. Seeing our “blur-cock” faces, he gestured for us to follow him to where the cook was (she was just opposite our table). He then said “Suki” and proceeded to raise some vegetables and vermicelli noodles. Afterwhich, the cook removed the lid off this icebox and said ” Chicken? or Pork?”

Realization then dawned on Rae and us (*cue chorus of heavenly angel music*). We then said “Chicken!” and he said “Okay!” and we went back to our table to wait for our meals to be served. I would’ve taken a picture of our “Suki” but I forgot to bring my camera from the office! Suki is just basically a tonne of vegetables, vermicelli noodles and pieces of chicken in soup. Ta-dah! Haha! So that’s ONE more dish I know. Oh! And “Phed See-Ew Khai”, which means fried kway teow noodles with really thick green vegetables and chicken pieces. I am crazy in love with this dish, especially if you add crushed peanuts, Thai “gunpowder” and prik nam plaa! XD Don’t think Thai Express does it as well as the “little roadside coffee shops” do! Haha!

Anyway, yesterday night, Rae and I popped down to Suan Lum Night Bazaar (at Lumphini) for a little walk-about after dinner (i had leftovers from dinner because we were too lazy to cook while Rae had jok (instant porridge!) and an egg :P ). Our only item purchased was Family Guy Season 6 for 280 baht (it had four discs inside). It is so cheapity-cheap because bloody MBK was selling theirs for like 500baht?! However, the other items on sale (like the counterfeit Coach and Chanel bags cost a bomb. Think 1800 baht a bag!). Maybe it was a better quality version for a counterfeit. But nonetheless, Chatuchak sells theirs for like 400baht only lorh!

Can’t believe that yesterday marked the second week of living in Bangkok. It feels like we’ve been here a month! Haha! Rae and I have been very good girls so far. Rogie asked us why we didn’t head to Khao San Road or Patpong (the nightlife areas). But we reasoned that #1. We wouldn’t be able to get into any clubs because we’re underaged. (Thai clubs only allow people aged 21 and up). #2. Going there eats up time AND $$money$$. Khao San Road and Patpong are SOOPAH far please! they’re like on the other side of the map! Cabbing there and back would cost us 300baht! OMG! Mahhneee flyyyy awayz~~~ T_T  And #3. We like good, clean fun. Like watching movies and shopping and reading (no, we’re NOT boring!) and running (for me anyways!).

So yeah. Nothing wrong in being a good girl what! I’ve been a good girl all my life, and I firmly believe I’m not boring. I know how to have fun okay! I think Rogie thinks we’re boring though. LOL. He even said we’re “very different” from the two previous interns. Still, they’re them and we’re us. XD

Today after work, we’re gonna head to the night market that’s near the iMax theatre! Will update JAJ soon (hopefully with pictures!) Love you all much! (:

XOXO,
sheereen for JAJ

editor’s note: haha i get to say i’m editor because i edited this thing. :D anywho. i think our bargaining skills have improved. 10 fold! back at chatuchak and mbk, getting a bargain is like wrestling with a sumo man – you’ll never win. but at suan lum, we got deals left, right and centre! like this woman who was selling jeans at 850baht each. i negotiated 600 even though i had no real intention of buying. “nooo, i give you 750. best price,” she started to say but sheereen and i already started walking off. so she shouted back, “okay! 600baht!”. hahaha. i didn’t buy the jeans even though i got the price i wanted. saving up money for other nonsense. :)

Okay, rule No.1 about bargaining…never offer a price unless you intend to buy. If you are just testint the waters, offer a ridiculously low price (20-30% of opening price). If the vendor bites, it’s your lucky day! Haha. BTW, jeans from Thailand are being sold at S$7.90 at Bugis and Beach Road.

what?! i paid 600bht at mbk. :(

Great post! Found another site which I must admit has come in handy while working remote: TravelMonks

They have a pretty good dynamic map of a lot of places and things, like this one on nightlife or this one on wireless internet places.
